Fostering Independence

By the end of this course, integration teachers will:

• Recognize signs of learned helplessness and over-reliance on adult support.

• Understand how to scaffold independence in a way that feels safe and achievable for students.

• Learn strategies to gradually shift responsibility to students in academic, social, and self-care tasks.

• Explore ways to encourage self-advocacy and problem-solving.
